Many people think that occupational therapy and physical therapy are the same, but there are some distinct differences that set the two apart. In this physical therapy education article, we are going to talk about the similarities and differences between a physical therapist and an occupational therapist.
A physical therapist is trained in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and focuses on evaluating and treating a patient’s injuries or movement dysfunction. Physical therapists work with patients to improve range-of-motion and decrease pain after an injury or debilitating condition.
Occupational therapists focus on improving a patient’s functional abilities and day-to-day tasks. As a result, occupational therapists often work with patients in the homes or work environments. Essentially, they help patients perform daily functions with practical strategies. An occupational therapist might help a patient learn how to get dressed after an injury, for example, while a physical therapist would be more focused on treating the injury itself.
