Women’s Health Physical Therapy
At OrthoRehab Specialists, our women’s health program is crafted to support you through every phase of life. From young athletes to expectant mothers, and from menopausal women to seniors, our Edina and Twin Cities clinicians bring advanced training in pelvic health, prenatal and postpartum care, chronic pain management, and functional rehabilitation. We address the unique challenges women face such as incontinence, pelvic pain, post-surgical recovery, and hormonal changes so you can regain strength, reduce pain, and participate fully in work, family, and leisure activities.
Why Specialized Women’s Health Care Matters
Women experience musculoskeletal and pelvic floor issues differently than men due to anatomical, hormonal, and life-event factors. Pregnancy places extra load on the spine, hips, and pelvic floor. Menopause can lead to bone density changes and joint stiffness. Surgical procedures such as breast surgery or hysterectomy can create scar tissue and change movement patterns. Our specialists understand these nuances and use evidence-based protocols to create personalized treatment plans that address both symptoms and underlying causes.
Core Conditions We Treat
- Urinary Incontinence: We treat stress, urge, and mixed incontinence with pelvic floor retraining, bladder re-education, and lifestyle modifications. Visit our Continence Care page for details.
- Pelvic Pain & SI Joint Dysfunction: Hands-on manual therapy, stabilization exercises, and functional training relieve discomfort and restore mobility.
- Prenatal & Postpartum Care: Safe core strengthening, gentle stretching, and posture training help manage back pain, symphysis pubis dysfunction, and diastasis recti.
- Osteoporosis & Bone Health: Low-impact weight-bearing exercises and balance work improve bone density and reduce fracture risk.
- Breast Surgery Rehabilitation: Scar mobilization, shoulder range-of-motion work, and posture correction following mastectomy or lumpectomy.
- Lymphedema Management: Manual lymphatic drainage, compression bandaging, and skin care education. Learn more on our Lymphedema Services page.
- Pelvic Organ Prolapse: Targeted pelvic floor exercises and core integration to support internal organs and improve quality of life.
- Diastasis Recti: Core reconstruction techniques and functional training to restore abdominal wall integrity and support.
Comprehensive Evaluation Process
Your first appointment will include a detailed assessment designed to uncover the root causes of your symptoms and set clear goals:
- Patient Interview: We review your medical history, lifestyle factors, and specific concerns whether you live in Edina, Bloomington, or Minneapolis.
- Postural and Movement Analysis: Static and dynamic observations of your spine, hips, and pelvis to pinpoint alignment issues.
- Pelvic Floor Assessment: With your comfort and consent, we perform noninvasive evaluations of pelvic floor strength and coordination.
- Functional Mobility Screens: Balance, gait, and core stability tests provide objective data to track improvements.
- Goal Setting: We collaborate to establish realistic short-term and long-term goals such as reducing leakage episodes, returning to running, or improving functional strength.
Tailored Treatment Modalities
Based on your evaluation findings your therapist will develop a customized treatment plan that may include:
- Manual Therapy: Joint mobilizations, soft tissue release, and myofascial techniques to relieve tension and improve mobility.
- Therapeutic Exercise: Pelvic floor strengthening, core stabilization, and functional movements to support daily activities.
- Breathing and Relaxation Techniques: Diaphragmatic breathing and guided relaxation reduce pelvic floor overactivity and overall stress.
- Functional Training: Task-specific drills and sport-related movements to safely return you to work hobbies, or athletics.
- Home Exercise Program: Simple effective routines you can perform at home to reinforce clinic progress and accelerate recovery.
- Patient Education: Guidance on posture, body mechanics, footwear selection, and lifestyle adjustments to maintain improvements long term.
- Modalities: Ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and cold compression as needed to manage pain and inflammation.
