We’ve talked about the benefits of physical therapy for concussion patients before. According to a new study in The Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy (JNPT), early physical therapy can be beneficial for young patients with concussions. In this physical therapy education article, we’ll take a deeper look at the study in question and how physical therapy can help patients after suffering a concussion.
Physical Therapy After a Concussion
The study examined 120 adolescent patients and how the timing of physical therapy impacted symptoms after a concussion injury. Patients were given a physical therapy program consisting of exercise, stretching, strengthening exercises, cervical spine manual therapy, and vestibular rehabilitation therapy.
“Multimodal PT interventions administered by licensed physical therapists may be feasible and safe even within the first few weeks after injury to help facilitate prompt recovery and mitigate the onset of secondary effects from delayed treatment,” according to the authors of the study.
No matter when it’s started after a concussion injury, a physical therapy program can be lead to significant improvement for patients suffering from concussion symptoms. This study highlights the effectiveness of physical therapy in the treatment of concussion symptoms.
